Chicken and rooster feathers on silk organza, hand-embroidered French knots and fringe (embroidery floss)
25.5" x 38.5"
As with many of my feather projects, donations from family and friends are crucial and highlight the collaborative spirit of community. For Henhouse, the mother of an artist friend generously donated me chicken feathers from her chicken coop in Oregon.
The beauty of these feathers inspired me to make an abstract composition following the curvature of the single tail feather of a rooster and embroidered them on fabric. Feathers are placed with some spacing between each other, and in groups by likeness and by size and following the organic shape of the rooster feather.
Each feather is fixed to the fabric with a french knot in the same way as my previous works with feathers. A handmade fringe using colors from the feathers sits at the bottom of the fabric, framing the rectangular composition.
