Feminicidio en Guatemala is an artist book with statistics of the crime of feminicide in Guatemala from 2000 to 2010, mostly taken from the National Police records.
Each number was hand embroidered with red thread on white lace pages and is based on copperplate style calligraphy. With this work I intend not only to bring awareness about this crime but also to honor the lives of these women.
The data was collected mostly from local newspapers that published every few months articles regarding feminicide and the escalating statistics of violence against women in the country. Although most of this data came from official records real numbers are believed to be higher than what is reported to the police.
Thanks to The Center for Book Arts’ Artist-in-Residence Workspace Grant—a year long program in 2012 where I had the opportunity to take many classes in bookbinding and letterpress—which helped immensily for the production of this artist book.
Special thanks to Iviva Olenick’s Crafting a Narrative, and Karen Gorst’s essential Copperplate Calligraphy classes.
I am also grateful for the advice from Ana Paula Cordeiro, regarding coptic binding technique and general production of the book.
