Unravelling the Fear

Camouflage fabric, pins, twill tape and magnets
Diptych:
-Warp piece: 36” high (34” unravelled) x 60” wide
-Weft piece: 60” high x 90.75” wide

Installation of two pieces of threads which were unravelled from one yard (60” x 36”) of camouflage fabric. More than 1,500 threads were unravelled by hand until having the the warp and the weft threads mostly separate, except for 2” left in the warp for support.

This piece is my response condemning the violence and repression by the military in Guatemala’s 36 years civil war; it’s my attempt to symbolically take away their power by entirely unraveling camouflage fabric thread-by-thread. The military governments involved in this war were responsible for the genocide of entire villages and the 40,000 disappeared victims.

Started in 2010 while artist-in-residency at LMCC’s Governors Island, this work-in-progress installation of threads were taken out from a yard of camouflage fabric.

For a period of 2 months I worked on unravelling threads by hand, and only 11.5” from the 36” original yard were unravelled at the time.
